Garfield Park Conservatory |
Created in 1881, Garfield Park is the oldest park in Indianapolis. In the early 1900s, the city hired renowned landscape architect George Kessler to expand the park's layout, based on a plan created by New York's Central Park designer, Frederick Law Olmsted Sr. Kessler believed parks should be broad, open venues for recreation and rumination, while serving as stepping stones to guide the city's development. Along with courts and playgrounds, Garfield Park's 136 acres feature two of Kessler's original centerpieces: a 10,000-square-foot horticultural conservatory and a sunken garden with lighted fountains. Admission to the conservatory and gardens is free. Located at 2505 Conservatory Drive. Call 317-327-7184.
